Romania’s MFA condemns destructive actions at Tighina gravesite
The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is concerned about the destructive actions at the Romanian war graves in the cemetery in Tighina town, which is controlled by the separatist authorities of Tiraspol.
According to the Romanian authorities, the provisions of the Geneva Convention of August 12, 1949 and those stipulated in the Protocol Additional 1 are infringed. The embassy of Romania in Chisinau received instructions to react and to urge authorities to stop the destructive actions and to restore the graves, in compliance with the aforementioned international documents.
Authorities in Bucharest say they will pay close attention to this case.
Protocol Additional 1 of the Convention stipulates in the article 34 that “the remains of persons who have died for reasons related to occupation or in detention resulting from occupation or hostilities and those of persons not nationals of the country in which they have died as a result of hostilities shall be respected, and the gravesites of all such persons shall be respected, maintained and marked”.
