The Party of Socialists’ candidate for mayor of Chisinau Zinaida Grecheanyi does not regret the statements he made in the evening of April 8, 2009 as Prime Minister, by which he threatened the young people with use of firearms if they mounted new protests. She made such a confession in the program “Interpol” on TV 7 channel, IPN reports.
“The statements were addressed to mothers, the parents, so that they called their children back home as these were exposed to risks. I didn’t say they will be shot. I said that we will defend the state institutions. Nobody intended to shoot, but the parents had to be prevented,” stated Grecheanyi.
The former Premier admitted that those statements affected her image, but she did it for a noble goal. “I was afraid something bad would happen. I know I angered many young people then, but my image was then less important than their fate. Many of them finally realized what they struggled for and how they were used. So, I didn’t regret and don’t regret making those statements,” stated Grecheanyi.
In the evening of April 8, 2009, Zinaida Grecheanyi, as Prime Minister, called on the young people and their parents not to take to the streets as the police will use guns against the protesters. As a result of these statements, the former Premier was nicknamed “Karabina” (from carbine).
