59 teacher positions are vacant until September 4 according to the General Department of Education, Science, Youth and Sports from Chisinau. Most of these positions are in the exact sciences – mathematics, physics and informatics. There is also a lack of teachers of physical education. The Ministry of Education has assigned 300 graduates of the higher educational institutions to the vacant positions in schools from Chisinau. Of these, until now only 105 were present in schools, and this number is by 40 less than last year, stated Eleonora Isac, deputy head GDESYS. According to the cited source, young teachers from Chisinau continue to be disadvantaged compared to those from villages. The Chisinau City Hall doesn’t provide them with a dwelling and doesn’t pay communal services, while the mayoralties from towns are compelled to do so. Young specialists are not assured with living space because the two GDESYS hostels have been privatized. According to Eleonora Isac, the young teachers from cities do not get the same financial support from the state as their colleagues from villages, which get MDL 10 thousand in the first year, MDL 7 thousand in the second and MDL 13 thousand in the third year. The 105 young teachers hired for this year have to pay the rent, while the wage of a young teacher is MDL 570, to which 10 percent bonus is added during 3 years for young specialist status. According to the General Department of Education, Youth and Sports, over the 2005-2006 study year a decrease in the fluctuation of teachers in the municipal study system was recorded. During this period, in schools from Chisinau municipal 600 teachers were hired while twice less specialists have quitted their jobs. The main reasons for teachers leaving their positions are small wages and the lack of living space.
