Workshop on epidemiological surveillance capacity to adress COVID-19 and other epidemics: an italo-moldovan cooperation

Thanks to the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, Italy (Regional Law 19/2000 on development cooperation and international partnership), the ICGEB Molecular Virology Group, ICGEB Trieste, and the Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova, are working together to enhance the Moldovan research capacities in the fight against COVID-19 and contribute to the establishment of a permanent infrastructure for the surveillance of coronaviruses and other human viruses.

To acquire new skills in the field of molecular virology, a 3-day professional training workshop will be held online in the afternoons, with experts in the field.

The focus on Tuesday 21 September will be “Public Health Management of viruses”, on Wednesday 22, “Diagnosis and surveillance of the virus”, and on Thursday 23, “Vaccine and therapy”.

As a side event, Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy and the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana will sign a Cooperation Agreement that will establish the basis for further scientific and educational activities between the parties. This new collaboration is the result of the implementation of the Republic of Moldova - Italy project, with the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology being a long-term partner of ICGEB.

Moldovan researchers from the Microbiology,  Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases Departments, their collaborators and students as well as national health authorities will participate. Through this workshop, ICGEB and Nicolae Testemitanu University aim to improve research capacities in the areas of infectious diseases and health surveillance systems and create the foundations for evidence-based decisions of Moldovan authorities and policy-makers in this area.
