Discussions about the introduction of the European integration in the Constitution will be initiated in Parliament, said Speaker Igor Grosu. According to him, even if the PAS doesn’t have a constitutional majority to amend the Supreme Law, the necessary votes could be identified. Some of the opposition MPs could temper their Euroskepticism after the major foreign policy events set to take place until the end of this year, IPN reports.

The resolution adopted at the European Moldova Assembly requests to amend the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova so as to establish the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union as irreversible and definitive. According to the document, this common aspiration of the citizens must be fulfilled by all political actors in the Republic of Moldova. The Speaker noted that the amendment of the Supreme Law is not an impossible mission.

“We will promote the amendment in Parliament and will discuss with other MPs. You will say that there are not enough votes, but if we focus on this, communicate, I think those who are more skeptical, after the European Moldova Assembly and after other events that will take place this year, will ultimately become more determined and confident in our European course. That’s why nothing is impossible. The summit set for June 1 forms part of the series of important events and it will confirm the member states’ support for the Republic of Moldova. I believe the European Moldova Assembly is a convincing argument for all our interlocutors that the citizens want the European integration. The summit is a possibility for them to see and feel our hospitality. It will be a historic event as Moldova for the first time will play host to so many Prime Ministers and Presidents of EU member states. We will show that we can be hospitable, good organizers and Europeans,” Igor Grosu stated in an interview with Radio Moldova.

The Speaker said that a referendum on the European integration will not be yet held as the citizens clearly stated their wish to be part of the European family.

“The elections of 2020 and 2021 were the best referendum, while the European Moldova Assembly was additional confirmation. The citizens of the Republic of Moldova are pro-Europeans. They support this desideratum. They want to form part of the world of peace, stability and respect for the people. That’s why all the things were already confirmed,” noted Igor Grosu.

By the resolution adopted at the end of the European Moldova Assembly, the citizens asked that the authorities should ensure, as soon as possible, the opening of the accession negotiations and should strengthen the state institutions in order to guarantee the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union.
