Who is Valeriu Munteanu, candidate for the capital’s mayoralty

The article is part of the information campaign launched by IPN, in which it presents biographical data, information regarding the income and possessions, as well as professional background of the contenders for the capital's mayoralty.

Valeriu Munteanu is the candidate of "Save Basarabia Union" Party for mayor seat at the general local elections in Chisinau,. His campaign was launched under the slogan: "We do not give up Chisinau to Russia". He is number five on the ballot.

Valeriu Munteanu is 38 years old and was born in Floreni village, Anenii Noi district. He is a graduate of "Valahia" University of Târgoviște, Romania, Faculty of Legal Sciences, where he obtained his degree in law in 2003. Later he took master's courses at the University in Bucharest, "Sociology and Social Assistance" Department.

At the general local elections of June 3, 2007, he was elected mayor in the village of Floreni, Anenii Noi district. On February 7, 2008 he became a member of the Liberal Party. At the 3rd PL Congress of September 26, 2010 he was elected as vice-chair of the party, a position held until 2018.

Following the early parliamentary elections in July 2009, Valeriu Munteanu became MP, holding his mandate until 2015. On July 30, 2015 he was appointed Minister of Environment, and on May 29, 2017, he resigned from this position.

Valeriu Munteanu was a Liberal Party’s candidate for 2018 new local elections in Chisinau. After processing 100% of the votes, the party accumulated 3.61%. Half a year later, Munteanu left the Liberal Party on the grounds that the party did not join PAS and PPDA in order to participate in the parliamentary elections on February 24, 2018.

After leaving PL, Munteanu becomes the candidate of DA PAS ACUM Bloc at the parliamentary elections of February 24, in constituency no. 18 Orhei-Calarasi. In this constituency, Valeriu Munteanu was defeated by the candidate of the Șor Political Party, Ilan Șor, who had accumulated about 60% of the votes. Valeriu Munteanu was on the second place, with just a little over 20% of the votes.

In July this year, the former vice-chair of the Liberal Party re-launched the "European Action Movement" Party with a new name - "Save Bessarabia Union" (USB) Party, being elected its leader.

For the period January 1, 2017- December 31, 2018, the candidate declared 190 thousand lei salary income and over 45 thousand lei obtained with his wife from allowances. Valeriu Munteanu owns an urban area, a dwelling house, two real estate objects and two cars. The family also declares a 100% participation in two Ltds.

If he becomes mayor, Valeriu Munteanu promises to bring the Chisinau International Airport into the City Hall's ownership. He also says he will try to obtain by referendum that the money collected by the Tax inspection from Chisinau be invested in Chisinau and not be available to the Government. Together with his team he intends to launch an integrated city development program, with public investments of two billion euros in modern infrastructure, and to bring in foreign investments of at least one billion euros over the next five years. He also promises the construction of a new gas-fired power station, in cogeneration, the arrangement of over 250 thousand parking spaces, several green spaces, but also new roads.

Valeriu Munteanu is a promoter of sport and healthy way of life. He is married and has four children.
