The Cabinet led by Ion Chicu after three failed attempts last week managed to assume responsibility for a package of laws before Parliament, a quorum being ensured by MP Ștefan Gațcan. Arcadie Barbăroșie, director of the Institute for Public Policy (IPP), said the Government did what it planned to and now the opposition does not have the possibility of seeking its dismissal. Consequently, Igor Dodon gains.

“He has the Government secured and this Government will ensure his results in elections, if a person is not found somewhere in the Democratic Party or the Party of Socialists who would join the Party of Action and Solidary. But this should be a bold person as the example of Mister Gațcan showed that there are instruments by which the MPs can be forced to take decisions that are suitable to the given groups,” Arcadie Barbăroșie stated in an interview for RFE/RL’s Moldovan Service.

As to the extended coalition that would include the PSRM, PDM, PAS and PPPDA, the IPP director said that surely President Igor Dodon wants this, but the PAS is already aware of the PSRM’s beware. The PAS is no longer able to accept another coalition with the PSRM. “Dodon can try with the PPPDA, but this party is principled and will not want to combine forces with the PSRM. So, these are nothing but eventual coalitions, but we realize that they are not possible,” stated Arcadie Barbăroșie.

He noted that snap parliamentary elections can be held in 2021, but are not possible this year, as the Constitutional Court held, but everything permanently depends on the vote of an MP.

In another development, referring to the people’s distrust in the political class, the IPP director said this picture from sociological researches will persist and the number of persons who do not really know who to vote for will not change. “I think this position will maintain until November 1, December 1, January 1 and, eventually, the Party of Socialists will lose support and, if Igor Dodon does nothing now with persons who would run in the elections, the battle for office of President will ultimately be between Maia Sandu and Renato Usatyi, while for the parliamentary elections we will yet see,” stated Arcadie Barbăroșie.
