The water in all the recreation places in the municipality of Chisinau is contaminated with bacteria and poses a danger to the population. Those who drink this water or swim in it expose themselves to the risk of developing acute diarrheal diseases. Moreover, as a result of the torrential rain, bodies of animals, household waste, detergents and oil products can reach this water, said hygienist Tudor Puiu.

Contacted by IPN for a comment, Tudor Puiu said the quality of water does not improve from year to year and the persons can contract not only acute diarrheal diseases, but also helminthes, skin diseases, allergies, hepatitis as animals also bathe in this water, especially stray dogs.

As regards the sand, the specialist said toxocara canis, a helminth parasite of dogs, was found in the taken samples. If this gets into human intestines, it can provoke a parasitic disease in children and in adults. This develops differently. In a person, the first symptoms appear on first contact with water or beach sand, while in another person in a month or two months, if the body is stronger and can fight infection. In most of the cases, the population is yet affected.

The recent floods washed away water from public toilets and sewers and the waste can get to beaches.

Tudor Puiu noted none of the six recreation places in Chisinau were prepared for the summer season. In Vadul lui Vodă, only the public toilets were renovated and connected to the central sewerage system, in accordance with European standards. There, the benches weren’t painted and the showier cubicles weren’t repaired and some of them are not connected to the water supply.

According to him, to reduce the flow of persons who want to swim and sunbathe on beaches in Chisinau, restrictions measures were imposed and the police should check the recreation places and monitor the situation there so as to prevent the people from swimming or sunbathing.
