In Chisinau there are several types of platforms where waste must be sorted into four fractions or two factions. One of them is the standard platform where there are four containers - green, blue, yellow (for each type of recyclable waste) and galvanized containers for mixed waste. At these platforms, waste is sorted into four fractions – cardboard/paper, metal/plastic/PET/tetra pack, glass, and mixed waste, IPN reports.

The Chisinau City Hall said that the recyclable waste (sorted at the source by the capital’s residents) from green, yellow and blue containers is taken away separately from the mixed waste, according to a schedule.

Thus, in the first two weeks of each month, waste is cleared from blue and yellow containers (paper/cardboard, PET, plastic, tetra pack, aluminum cans, metal), as follows: on Mondays and Tuesdays, waste is collected from platforms in Botanica district, on Wednesdays – Buiucani, on Thursday – Centru, on Fridays – Rascani, on Saturdays – Ciocana.

Subsequently, in the third week of each month, recyclable waste from green containers, namely glass containers, is taken away. Recyclable waste is transported by special vehicles equipped with adjusted mechanisms for loading containers in which recyclable waste is stored.

The other, mixed waste (from galvanized containers) is collected practically every day, according to a schedule stipulated in the contracts for the provision of services for the collection/disposal and transportation of municipal waste.

The municipality noted that there are also cases when citizens throw biodegradable, mixed waste in containers intended for recyclable waste (glass, cardboard/paper, PET, plastic, aluminum cans, metal), violating the rules regarding the sorting of waste at the source.

“Biodegradable or mixed waste can contaminate recyclable waste, making it unsuitable for the recycling process. Contamination can affect the quality of recyclable material and significantly reduce its value. When such cases are detected, it is decided to collect recyclable waste together with mixed waste. This ensures that the recyclable materials remaining in the recycling stream are of the necessary quality for being processed efficiently,” reads a press release of the City Hall.
