The Vulcănești power station, managed by Moldelectrica, will be extended by building an additional 400 kV cell. The contract for the execution of works was signed with a Romanian company that was chosen at a tender contest. The value of the contract is €3.8 million and the execution period is up to 16 months, IPN reports.
Initially, the project in Vulcănești envisaged the construction of a back-to-back station to ensure the synchronization of the energy system of the Republic of Moldova with the European one. However, with the connection of the electricity system of the Republic of Moldova to ENTSO-E, the need for synchronization through the back-to-back station disappeared, said Ruslan Surugiu, director of the Consolidated Unit for the Implementation and Monitoring of Energy Projects (UCIPE).
"As a result, the concept regarding the Vulcănești station was transformed by extending this with a new cell, which also helped to save about €200 million, which could be directed to other needs and projects," explained Ruslan Surugiu.
The works are part of the project to develop the electricity system and of the urgent measures of the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Ministry of Energy. The total value of the project is €61 million and is financed by the International Development Association of the World Bank Group.
