Dozens of volunteers who took part in the Nistru war of 1992 laid flowers at the monument to Stephan the Great in central Chisinau on June 19 in the morning. They remembered the combatants who died in one of the harshest battles, in Bender, Info-Prim Neo reports.
One of the volunteers, Ilie Nutoi from Cobusca village of Anenii Noi district, said he came to commemorate those who were killed in the war. “It was hard. I left two little children at home, but I went to fight because I had to defend my country,” said the man.
Widow of a volunteer Maria Tugulea from Nisporeni said she came together with a number of villagers who fought in the 1992 war to honor those who died for the country.
Another volunteer Ilie Paduret said June 19 is a black day for the volunteers as a lot of young men were killed in that battle.
Daughter of a volunteer Alina Malai came to the event instead of her father who could not attend owing to health reasons. The girl said that her father avoids talking about the war because it is too painful for him.
After laying flowers, the volunteers went to a commemoration meal.
One of the bloodiest battles of the 1992 war was fought in Bender on June 19. According to official reports, about 28,000 combatants took part in the Nistru war. Of them, 286 died.
