Vladimir Voronin says crime rate went up

The former president of Moldova Vladimir Voronin, who is the leader of the Communists Party (PCRM), said that the criminological situation in the country during the current political changes has worsened, Info-Prim Neo reports. Recently, the Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu had a meeting with representatives of the law enforcement bodies and asked them: “Why does the crime rate increase when the power is changed?” At a news conference on September 15, Vladimir Voronin said that this question can be answered only by the Speaker. “”Ghimpu knows better what he says. Who knows, maybe they (the criminals – e.n.) are sponsors who had been engaged in the electoral campaign and now recoup their investment,” Voronin said. The leader of the PCRM also said that as MP he asked the outgoing Minister of the Interior Gheorghe Papuc to report on the present situation. “Mister Papuc calmed me down and assured me that everything is under control. Such information exists indeed. The terraces in Chisinau are full of criminals. But the police take measures. I believe in them,” Voronin said. The caretaker Prime Minister Vitalie Parlog Tuesday called managers of the law enforcement bodies for a meeting, where he stressed that “it is very important to ensure the economic and energy security of the country now that it faces an economic and political crisis,” the Government says in a communiqué.
