Vlad Ţurcanu nominated for “Teleradio-Moldova” director general

Journalist Vlad Ţurcanu was proposed by for the post of director general of the National Public Broadcaster “Teleradio-Moldova” (TRM) by the company’s Supervisory Board. The candidate was accepted by the votes of six of the seven members of the new Board and is to be examined by Parliament, IPN reports, quoting trm.md. The Supervisory Board’s secretary Sergiu Stanciu said the candidate was suggested by the Board’s chairman Arcadie Gherasim.

Vlad Țurcanu is a journalist and communication specialist, with work experience of over 20 years in both of the areas. In 2012-2016, he served as adviser to and spokesman for President Nicolae Timofti. Earlier, he worked as a journalist for Radio Moldova, TV Moldova 1, RFE/RL’ Moldovan Service and a member of the Broadcasting Coordination Council. Vlad Țurcanu is a Bachelor of Journalism and Communication Science, with the degree being obtained from the State University of Moldova. In January-November 2020, he performed political activities, being the first vice president of the National Unity Party of the Republic of Moldova (PUN).

In accordance with the law, the director general of the national public broadcaster is appointed by Parliament at the Supervisory Board’s suggestion for a seven-year term that cannot be renewed.

Under the Code of Audiovisual Media Services, the TRM director general can be dismissed by Parliament on its own initiative in several cases: based on the tendered resignation; after finding that the fulfillment of the professional duties is inappropriate, and in other cases stipulated by the legislation.
