The Republic of Moldova, despite its mimic and lack of importance for the big international players, can arouse the interest of these owing to the way in which President Igor Dodon defiantly asserts himself. President Dodon tries to attract attention to himself and, consequently, to the Republic of Moldova. In this regard, the U.S. cannot calmly follow how games that can affect its geopolitical interests in the region are played here, the first vice president of the National Unity Party Vlad Țurcanu stated in a public debate entitled “Political or apolitical, party or common candidate for next elections, why?” that was staged by IPN News Agency.

He noted that the decent intervention of the international community should not be overlooked in the context of the upcoming presidential elections. “We saw that the international component played an overwhelming role when the whole system controlled by the Democratic Party remained without a coordinator. I think the Republic of Moldova, despite its mimic and lack of importance for the big international players, can arouse the interest of these owing to the way in which President Igor Dodon defiantly asserts himself, trying to attract attention to himself and, consequently, to the Republic of Moldova. I do not think that the U.S. can calmly follow how games that can affect its geopolitical interests in the region are played here,” stated the politician.

According to him, the inertia of the last few weeks around the candidates and favorites that will persist during the next few months is relevant. However, other options should also be examined as, before the presidential election campaign, the inadmissibility for a political figure that should have fled the county last June to run should be emphasized. “Not all the oligarchs and thieves ran away then. I refer to Igor Dodon here. Also, as regards the other candidate of the right, Maia Sandu, we all remember that the PAS showed its limits when it ruled for a short period of time. I think a very worrisome signal was given before the elections in Hâncești when the PAS insisted on its own candidate without consulting its partner, the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform,” he stated.

Vlad Țurcanu also said that the interparty communication at present does not rise to the necessary quality level and this is evident. “On the one hand, there is a reconciliatory message that seems rather artificial given the behavior of the messengers. On the other hand, an intransigent behavior is seen in those who have higher percentage in polls, but who do not realize the stake of this autumn’s elections. In plain words, if one expects to be supported in the presidential elections, they start to make friendly gestures now already, trying to secure support as the candidate with greater chances should realize that this is not a stake, but is actually a political game. We should then remember that we have a presidential republic and events that can influence the presidential elections can take place in the legislative body. The PDM could be that “jolly joker” that would be needed by the winner of the presidential elections. However, for the PDM to play that role, something should happen in Parliament. The PDM should migrate either to the left or to the right.”

According to the politician, the President who is to be elected has the duty to shake the current damaging system that is inefficient as the corrupt elites keep power and the citizens leave the country. The President should transmit a development concept to society and the discussion should be appropriate when it centers on who should be the candidate for President.

The debate “Political or apolitical, party or common candidate for next elections, why?” was the 124th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture through public debates” that are supported by the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
