First Deputy Speaker Vlad Plahotniuc has told Info-Prim Neo that he is in favor of putting higher taxes on the incomes of the rich people. The Agency asked for an explanation from Vlad Plahotniuc, who is said to be owning large property, after he delivered a speech in the debates on the budgetary-fiscal policy bill in Parliament on December 15. During the discussions, Vlad Plahotniuc said introducing a tax of 25% is one of the improvements that must be made to the bill. “I’m for putting a tax rate of 25% on the persons who own more than 500 000 lei a year, which is twice higher. I think many of you already have an opinion on the issue, which can be hardly changed. I will now only enumerate this measure and will provide no other arguments,” he stated. Asked by the Agency to state his position, Vlad Plahotniuc said he supports the proposal that he formulated himself as the deputy head of the Democratic Party within a common view with which the party came to the debates in Parliament. “The amendment envisions putting a tax of 25% on the property of those who are more successful from financial viewpoint. This is thus a common sense gesture and a public equity act. The adoption of this measure will give a signal that there is solidarity between the businesspeople, all the social layers and the Government in our society. This tax is acceptable for the businesspeople. For the other members of society, who are financially less successful, it is a meaningful gesture, first of all symbolic. It shows that we are not indifferent to the problems faced by those in need,” said Vlad Plahotniuc. The speech given by the politician and businessman in Parliament focused on three main principles – efficient measures, social equity and consideration, which, accordingly, mean economic development.
