The President will be chosen by the people and this will be elected to act not as a mediator between the Democratic Party’s Government and the Democratic Party’s Parliament, but as a mediator between the people and the power and the Head of State will represent the power and the people’s interests, executive secretary of the Party of Socialists (PSRM) Vlad Batrancea stated in the electoral public debate “Specific traits of presidential elections 2016: vision of parliamentary parties” of the series “What kind of President is society looking for? What society does the President need?”, organized by IPN News Agency.

The MP considers that when the people ask for a referendum or another thing, the President will have to do his/her best for the voice of the people to be heard.

According to Vlad Batrancea, the people took to the streets because they needed justice. Therefore, a powerful President must be elected, who will do everything the law and the Constitution enable him to and who will really be the guarantor of the Constitution. “The future President who will be elected on October 30 must be straightforward. The Republic of Moldova has a future and will remain a subject of the international law and an integral, independent and sovereign state. The people in this state enjoy and possess sovereignty,” he stated.

He also said that real changes in the country like the freeing of justice and of the state from captivity are not possible with the current Parliament. That’s why the future President wil have an important task – to find legal, constitutional ways to organize early parliamentary elections. “This system must be changed fully, not only cosmetically,” said the executive secretary of the PSRM.

According to him, it is good that the right to choose the President by the people’s vote was obtained by protests. “This will be the first important step for freeing the country from captivity. The President will have an important mission – to remove this oligarchic system so that we could start to build a state with the rule of law, or will be unable to build the country’s economy. If we calculate how many billions of lei were stolen during these years, we will see that we wouldn’t have needed donations from outside if this money hadn’t been stolen,” said the MP.

Vlad Batrancea noted that the people must take part in elections and it is important that they choose a candidate who represents the opposition, who would be a powerful person able to change things in the country.

The September 21 public debate is the 60th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
