Not particular ministries of Parliament, but the whole country becomes a member of the European Union. Namely the country must become a candidate for accession to the EU, while society must be informed about the stages of the European integration process, charge d’affaires of Latvia in Chisinau Vita Dobele said in the public debate “Moldova after Vilnius and Riga: opportunities and challenges for the next destination”, which was organized by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

According to the official, in the European integration process society must be united and must know the stages and effects of the European course. The people must be informed about the provisions of the agreements between Moldova and the EU and must know the steps taken on the path of European integration.

Speaking about the European integration of Latvia, Vita Dobele said that this process in her country took place easier than in Moldova for a number of reasons. One of them is the fact that Latvia has a richer statehood experience than Moldova. Also, while forming part of the European Union, Latvia managed to keep its language and script.

The charge d’affaires of Latvia in Chisinau noted that the national symbols in the Soviet period were also used allegorically, even if this was not allowed namely because the national symbols were alive and represented a basis for strengthening society in Latvia.

The diplomat also said that after the proclamation of independence, the Latvian parties reached an agreement on the common direction of the country’s foreign policy – to the NATO and the EU.

The public debate entitled “Moldova after Vilnius and Riga: opportunities and challenges for the next destination” is the 56th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged with the support of the German foundation “Hanns Seidel”.
