There are no reasons for panic in society, the head of the General Police Inspectorate (GPI) Viorel Cernăuțeanu said following the armed attack at the Chisinau International Airport, which resulted in two deaths. According to him, the attacker is a citizen of Tajikistan and there is for now no information confirming that he forms part of a foreign military or paramilitary body, IPN reports.

The GPI chief assured that there are no dangers to the security of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova after two persons died and one was hurt in the armed attack at the airport. He noted that several more persons were declared undesirable in the Republic of Moldova.

“There is no danger to society and there are no reasons for panic in society. No person ran away from the Chisinau International Airport. All the persons who were declared undesirable in the Republic of Moldova are identified and they are in the custody of the law enforcement agencies. There were no persons who evaded, ran away or are not under the supervision of the law enforcement agencies. Those who were declared undesirable in the Republic of Moldova weren’t sent back, but are in the custody of state institutions,” stated Viorel Cernăuțeanu.

He noted that it is not yet clear if the attacker has Russian nationality too.

“The citizen came with the nationality of Tajikistan. Aspects about other nationalities are being verified. I don’t think the double or triple nationality is the main aspect in this case,” said the GPI head.

Moreover, Viorel Cernăuțeanu denied reports that the attacker was a member of the Wagner military group. He noted there is no information about the fact that the attacker is wanted.

“There is no confirmation that this citizen has ties with particular military or paramilitary groups from outside the Republic of Moldova. The first checks showed the person wasn’t at least in the focus of an international law enforcement agency,” explained Viorel Cernăuțeanu.

As a result of the armed attack at the Chisinau International Airport, 31-year-old border police officer Sergei Muntean died. The victim served as deputy chief agent and had worked for the Border Police since 2011. An aviation security officer was also killed during the attack. One of the passengers was hurt.
