Moldova after 1960 had national elite in power, national economy, agriculture and industry, potential that was yet lost and the then generations now realize this fact. The industrialization done by the Soviets in the period is categorically a positive factor that was yet lost, chairman of the Socialist People’s Party of Moldova Victor Stepaniuc stated in the public debate “A century of Russian Revolution: consequences and expectations”, which was the 80th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates” and was staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

Victor Stepaniuc said some consider the Bolshevik Revolution was a follow-up to the revolution of February the same year that failed. The Revolution started with uprisings by the poor as the people suffered famine even in the largest cities. The Bolsheviks didn’t stage a coup in Russia. They took over the power that “was lying in the street”.

“The Russian Revolution of 1917 and, in general, what is called the phenomenon of the Soviet Union, of building of the Socialist system in the European space contributed to the democratization or what is now called realization or practical implementation of the contemporary social state. In the 19th century, we had reform after reform at political level and at the start of the 20 century in the field of social policies, concretely implemented social ideas, and the USSR was a leader in this regard,” stated Victor Stepaniuc.

He noted that in February 1917 Bessarabia was just a Russian province with a population of 2.5 million, where the cultural and political rights were violated, but the situation changed in May-June the same year. “I try to see this phenomenon mainly as a positive one. Surely, the consequences of World War I got mingled here as we in January were occupied despite the wish of the largest part of the population from here,” said the politician.

The chairman of the Socialist People’s Party of Moldova added that the contemporary statehood of the Republic of Moldova has its roots in the events of 2017, not of 1924 or 1940-1941, as many historians wrote, because more than 6,000 documents based on congresses held by clerics, students and intellectuals show that the Moldovans pleaded one way or another for self-government, for official language and for Moldovan administration.

The public debate “A century of Russian Revolution: consequences and expectations” was the 80th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are organized with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation of Germany.
