The victims of the Jewish Pogrom of 1903 were commemorated today in Chisinau. The leadership of the City Hall, together with representatives of the Jewish community of Moldova, representatives of diplomatic missions and international organizations laid flowers at an iconic monument in Alunelul Park.

Mayor Ion Ceban condemned the horrors of the 1903 Pogrom to which the Jews of Chisinau were subjected 121 years ago. The mayor highlighted the role of the Jewish community in Chisinau at that time, who contributed significantly, together with the native population, to the development of the city. Ion Ceban added that the municipal authorities are in solidarity with the State of Israel and the Jewish people in the difficult moments of the present days, when there have been attacks on the security of the country. The mayor expressed his hope that such tragic cases will never happen again.

The Alunelel Park, the venue of the event, is symbolic for the Jewish community, given that there was previously a Jewish cemetery here, where victims of the 1903 Pogrom were also buried

During the rehabilitation of the Alunelul Park, a project carried out with the support of Romania, the municipal authorities insisted that all the elements of the 1903 Pogrom Monument be preserved, taking into account all the recommendations of the Jewish Community of Moldova.

During the 1903 Chisinau Pogrom, 49 people died, about 500 people were injured, and a third of the city's buildings, which belonged to the Jewish population, were damaged .
