The veterans have protested in the Great National Assembly Square, being dissatisfied with the authorities’ attitude to them. They seek the resignation of the Government and of President Igor Dodon. The police formed a cordon around the Government Building, hampering the protesters’ access to the building. Even so, one of the protesters broke a glass window with a mace, IPN reports.
Veteran Anatolie Macovei said the veterans on January 9 asked for a social package, but all kinds of bureaucratic procedures followed. At the start of February, a resolution with nine demands was submitted to the Government, but no response came. “They ignore the demands of the war veterans who defended the independence and integrity of the Republic of Moldova. We are not heard. We are ignored. No one went out to talk to us and the people are very dissatisfied,” he stated.
Protester Victor Ciobanu said the veterans ask to institute the Gratitude Day and have also other demands. “We want the rulers to come out and answer our questions and tell us what they intend to do further? We will protest till the end,” he stated, noting that the difficult social situation affects everyone, not only the veterans and the people want their rights to be respected.
Civic activist Valentin Eșanu stated that those who are now in power weren’t elected by the people. “They came to power by fraud as the votes for them were bought and obtained dishonesty,” he said.
Olga Bârsanu said that her brother died on the battlefield. He was 32 and left two children. “Dear people, I call on all those who care about this country and these persons who left their families and fought for the integrity of this country, who remember those who were killed and the children of these remained without fathers, come near us to take the country back from thieves and robbers,” urged the woman.
The protest was mounted on March 2, when it is celebrated the Day of Remembrance of those killed in the armed conflict on the Nistru. The section of Ștefan cel Mare Blvd between the streets Bănulescu-Bodoni and Pushkin has been inaccessible to traffic.
