Veaceslav Platon, who was sentenced to 30 years in jail in two criminal cases, wasn’t caused bodily injuries, said children’s ombudswoman Maia Bănărescu, who temporarily fulfils the duties of people’s ombudsperson. Asked about eventual complaints or wishes during a visit, the businessman said he would like to meet his lawyers and he also needs a consultation with a dentist and newspapers, IPN reports.

The ombudswoman and a group of employees of the Ombudsman’s Office visited Penitentiary No. 13 to mediate the conflict that appeared between the lawyers for Veaceslav Platon and the penitentiary’s administration. The director of Penitentiary No. 13 Igor Pîntea and the lawyers were invited to a dialogue and the meeting was set to take place in the afternoon of March 1, at the prison.

The mediation process didn’t yet take place as the penitentiary’s director refused to meet the lawyers for Veaceslav Platon, arguing he didn’t bar their access to their client and cannot offer them a preferential regime of visits. Igor Pîntea assured he will contact the ombudswoman on March 4 to discuss the lawyers’ access to Penitentiary No. 13.

When going out of the penitentiary, Maia Bănărescu discussed with the businessman’s lawyers, offering them details about the meeting with the jail’s chief and Veaceslav Platon. She said she will continue to monitor the observance of the  businessman’s right to defense and will issue a press release on the subject.

One of Veaceslav Platon’s lawyers said he was recently informed by his client’s relatives that the businessman was stabbed in the prison. The lawyers went to Penitentiary No. 13 to meet with Veaceslav Platon, but were banned access.

The National Administration of Penitentiaries issued a press release by which it denied the reports about the stabbing of detainee Platon Veaceslav. It said that no incidents of the kind happened in the penitentiary where the businessman is held.

Veaceslav Platon was arrested in July 2016 on charges of swindle and money laundering in extremely larger amounts by which he caused over 800 million lei damage to Bănca de Economii (Savings Bank). He got 30 years behind bars in two criminal cases. The businessman pleads not guilty.
