The head of the National Anticorruption Center (NAC) Iulian Rusu does not exclude the possibility that businessman Veaceslav Platon, who hides from Moldovan justice, will be put on the sanctions list of the EU. According to him, the process of extending the list of sanctioned persons continues and depends exclusively on the decision of the states that impose these sanctions, IPN reports.
Recently, the European Union announced the imposition of sanctions against Vlad Plahotniuc, Ilan Shor, Marina Tauber, Gheorghe Cavcaliuc and Russian citizen Igor Chaika. Controversial businessman Veaceslav Platon, who is accused of money laundering, is not on the EU sanctions list, but was yet sanctioned by Canada.
“The imposition of sanctions is up to the jurisdictions where these sanctions are imposed and depends on internal procedures by which it is decided the seriousness of the information or potential evidence for imposing these sanctions. The information about Platon is known to the general public. I think it is an exercise that hasn’t yet come to an end. This name can yet appear given the multiple suspicions of illegalities which are known by the general public,” Iulian Rusu stated in the program “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
The NAC chief noted that a number of criminal cases were started against Veaceslav Platon and these are handled by prosecutors, but this process should not be mixed up with an eventual sanction imposed by the EU.
“A number of cases are being managed by the NAC and the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office, by investigation officers and prosecutors. The investigations go on and we should be very attentive to the sanctioning process and the investigation process as these are two distinct exercises. The imposition of sanctions depends on the procedures of the givens state, while in the second case, we abide by the Criminal Procedure Code,” said the head of the National Anticorruption Center.
Controversial businessman Veaceslav Platon was put on the sanctions list of Canada over actions aimed at destabilizing the situation in Moldova. The Moldovan oligarch said he will request the Canadian Parliament to form a commission of inquiry into the involvement of Canadian officials in blackmailing against him. He also said that owing to the sanctions imposed on him, he decided to become involved in politics and to also found a new party.
