The leader of the Party “Democracy at Home” Vasile Costiuc is on hunger strike. The information was made public by Vasile Costiuc’s lawyer by a video posted on the party’s Facebook page after leaving the National Anticorruption Center, IPN reports.

According to the lawyer, his client went on hunger strike in protest. He asked to be brought books and medicines as he has problems with the circulatory system. Vasile Costiuc urged yet to remain clam.

The lawyer said the leader of the Party “Democracy at Home” is suspected of money laundering and abuse of power. They will file a complaint about the arrest of Vasile Costiuc and the searches carried out at his home from where only his mobile phone bought half a year ago was seized at a time when the offenses were allegedly committed in 2008.

“Both of the offenses in aggravated forms carry jail terms of five to ten years. He is suspected of money laundering and abuse of power. We consider he cannot be held accountable for abuse of power as he didn’t hold any public post, while in the case of “participation in a criminal organization”, there are no proofs,” stated the lawyer for Vasile Costiuc.

He also said that the investigation body during 72 hours will decide whether to charge his client or not.

Three persons were arrested as a result of the searches carried out on January 12 by officers of the National Anticorruption Center and anticorruption prosecutors in the case concerning the sale of lots of land owned by the Durlești mayor’s office. The information was confirmed for IPN by the press officer of the Prosecutor General’s Office Mariana Cherpec.

The three persons are the president of the Party “Democracy at Home” Vasile Costiuc, municipal councilor Veaceslav Nedelea and a woman who was allegedly involved in the scheme, said NAC spokeswoman Angela Starinschi.
