USMF marks 25 years since initiation of partnership between Moldova and North Carolina

“Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Republic of Moldova (USFM) marks 25 years since the initiation of the bilateral cooperation partnership between the Republic of Moldova and the U.S. state of North Carolina. The educational institution’s rector Emil Ceban said that the development of the partnership is of particular importance for the university and the entire medical community of the country. The university successfully carries out cooperation projects with medical education, research, healthcare institutions of North Carolina, IPN reports.

The rector of “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, professor Emil Ceban noted that over the years, within the partnership, the institution implemented a number of cooperation projects in the field of dentistry, pharmacy, general medical assistance. The activities focused mainly on organizing distance educational courses, academic mobility for teachers, students, librarians. The university received technical assistance from universities and various organizations of North Carolina. All these activities have a systemic character and have a beneficial impact on medical higher education and the health system of the Republic of Moldova. “In the future, we want our cooperation with partners from the United States to develop continuously in the name of human progress, peace and prosperity,” stated the rector of USMF.

U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova Kent D. Logsdon said that the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy plays an important role in maintaining the well-being and health of the Moldovan citizens. The U.S., the Department of State and the Department of Defense extensively invest in Moldova’s healthcare system. It comes to technical assistance, medical donations to support the rural community, health insurance for refugees from Ukraine.

North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall noted that the partnership between North Carolina and the Republic of Moldova is one of the things to be proud of as this is a model to follow for similar cooperation relations. “We celebrate 25 years of academic, health, agricultural, economic, governmental and cultural exchanges and also many humanitarian efforts made, including two 13.7-meter containers with more than 21 tonnes of lifesaving medical equipment and supplies, mobility equipment, educational resources and much more, which arrived in Moldova a few weeks ago. This seed that we planted together with so much optimism, hope and care when we signed the first memorandum of understanding in 1999 has now grown into a prosperous and mature tree with many branches,” said the North Carolina Secretary of State. In 2015, the Senate of “Nicolae Testemițanu” State University of Medicine and Pharmacy conferred the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Elaina Marshall.

The Republic of Moldova – North Carolina bilateral partnership was formalized on April 22, 1999, based on the agreement to strengthen the efforts of the governments of both states aimed at facilitating mutually beneficial and efficient cooperation.
