The bollards placed on sidewalks in the municipality of Chisinau and other delimitation urban furniture can be dangerous for the blind, warned organizations that promote the rights of persons with disabilities. In public debates, executive director of the Center for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Vitalie Meşter said a common approach to the installation of street furniture is needed so that this furniture does not harm anyone, especially the persons with visual impairments who are the most vulnerable ones in this case.

“We come with support on the part of civil society for the local public authorities so that we make together this city more accessible and friendly to each of us,” stated Vitalie Meşter. He referred to the opportunity of engaging a volunteer consultant on accessibility in the activities of the Chisinau City Hall’s Executive Coordination Division.

Ion Cibotărică, of the Center for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, said there are national building standards and a new Building Code was approved last year. Under these, the sidewalks should be laid out in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization’s requirements in the field.

Mayor of Chisinau Ion Ceban promised that the bollards will be replaced. “We are absolutely ready to do this. I think we could even create the Consultative Council under the Chisinau City Hall, which would address a number of issues. During the next few years, we will concentrate our efforts on making progress in ensuring accessibility,” he pledged.
