Union of unionists in Moldova put off

The unionists in the Republic of Moldova remain divided in at least two camps before the snap parliamentary elections of July 11. On the one hand, the representatives of AUR said their party is the only one that is able to enter the future Parliament and to represent the unionist segment in the country’s legislative body. On the other hand, the PUN said it would accept to cooperate only as part of an electoral bloc, not on the list of AUR.

The representatives of AUR said the platform they propose to all the unionist forces can achieve the Union desideratum during a short period of time, when AUR holds a majority in the Parliaments in Chisinau and Bucharest.

“It wasn’t possible to forge a Union until now as there were parties in Romania that only mimicked or whispered about the Union. AUR Romania really wants the Union and can unite all the Romanians from Tiraspol to Timișoara. These elections are only a step towards the Union. The Union will be possible when AUR forms a majority in Romania and in the Republic of Moldova” Valeriu Munteanu, of AUR, stated in the talk show “Ghețu Asks” on TV8 channel.

At the same time, Iurie Reniță, a potential candidate for MP on behalf of the PUN, said AUR wants to monopolize the unionist segment in the Republic of Moldova.

“We suggested forming an electoral bloc, but they refused. They offered us to run on the list of AUR. The formula of a bloc, by keeping the identity of each party, would have been the most appropriate one, and it was a clear message of unity addressed to the unionists. I hope in the campaign we will have the decency and moral correctness not to attack each other,” said MP Iurie Reniță.

The idea of an electoral bloc between the unions and pro-European forces is supported by the representatives of the PPPDA, who said that such a formula would have ensured a safe pro-European majority in Parliament.

‘There are many unionists in the pro-European parties, in the PAS and PPPDA. I think each person who aspires to the European values is also unionist. A large bloc, consisting of the PPPDA-PAS-PUN, should have been formed and we would have then won 56-60 seats of MP. The political left suffered a serious blow at the presidential elections and will suffer a similar blow now too,” said PPPDA MP Vasile Năstase.

Thee unionist political parties of the Republic of Moldova have joined AUR recently. These are the Romanian People’s Party, the Liberal Party and Save Bessarabia Union.
