The Romanian and Moldovan authorities are expecting the A8 highway, dubbed the Union Highway project, to be completed by 2030. This was announced by Ionel Scrioșteanu, state secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Transport, after making a visit to Chisinau to discuss this and other transport infrastructure projects.
“Our common goal is to make it possible to travel from Bucharest to Chisinau on this highway by 2030”, Scrioșteanu posted on Facebook.
Other ongoing projects that were discussed included the bridges over the Prut River and the respective border facilities, with the next border crossing to allow coordinated checks being Giurgiulești-Galați.
In its statement about the meeting between Scrioșteanu and his Moldovan counterpart Nicolai Mîndra, the Moldovan Ministry of Infrastructure said the discussions focused on “best practices and Romania’s experience in using IT systems in transport railway”. In particular, the sides discussed the possibilities of developing IT systems to operate rail transport across the Prut, in accordance with the EU standards of interoperability and IT security.
