IPN Agency reacted to the concerns expressed by Moldovan society, which fears that the day of May 9 may be used by different circles of interest as a pretext for particular kinds of provocations and for causing destabilization in Moldova. The concerns seem sufficiently justified in the context of the profound regional crisis that affects Moldova too. The given mini-series will present the opinions of representatives of central and local public authorities, of political parties and analysts and the measures by which the possible provocations can be prevented or annihilated.

Deputy mayor of Ungheni town Eduard Balan has told IPN that a commemoration meeting will be held in the town on May 9, where local officials will give speeches. A march will be staged and flowers at monuments will be laid afterward. Then the veterans will go to the Stele of Heroes and then to a dinner held for them. A concert will be given in the center of the town in the afternoon, dedicated to Europe Day already.

“We merged the two holidays. We started to celebrate Europe Day on May 6. We staged a concert at the Home of Culture. Earlier, the concert was held in the evening, but now the concert on Europe Day will be given after all the activities intended for the veterans are over. This year, the concert in the square of the mayor’s office will be dedicated to Europe Day. We will also mount different sports competitions on May 9,” said the deputy mayor.

Eduard Balan added that there is no marked controversy over the holiday that must be celebrated on May 9 in Ungheni and nobody pronounces categorically. Over the last few years, the events took place without provocations and problems. The deputy mayor considers that the two holidays must be merged and everyone will be satisfied.

An approach was made to the Ministry of the Interior and 27 carabineers were deployed in the town to patrol the streets until May 10. The deputy mayor said such an approach is usually made in this period in order to maintain public order, not in the event of possible provocations.
