In Moldova, three in four women or 73% have faced at least one form of abuse from their partner. 71% were victims of psychological abuse, while a third of women were subjected to physical violence, and 20.9% to sexual violence. The United Nations in Moldova, in partnership with the public authorities, the international community and civil society, joins the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, which takes place annually starting on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and ending on December 10, the International Human Rights Day. The campaign launch event will take place on November 24.
The event organized by UN Women will include an immersive digital art exhibition titled “Rising from the Shadows: The Sun Never Sets”, illustrating the stories of four women from Moldova and Ukraine, from different backgrounds and ages, affected by various types of violence. The goal is to raise awareness of the seriousness of this phenomenon and the need to take immediate action to prevent and eradicate it. The title refers to one of these stories in which a mother metaphorically called her abuser “The Sun” in order not to frighten and cause suffering to her daughter.
“Women and girls in Moldova continue to suffer from various forms of violence. They need support and protection. Our continued joint guidance and efforts to promote support for victims of violence, and also to assist the Government in combating gender-based violence is essential to make a difference. Each of us has a role to play, and with each action to prevent gender-based violence, we are one step closer to building a safer, more equal and more prosperous future”, said Simon Springett, UN Resident Coordinator Moldova.
“Violence against women and girls continues to be an obstacle to realizing their rights. Violence against women can and must be prevented. Increased joint efforts and investments are needed in prevention measures and in ensuring that women who are or may be at risk have access to protection, support services, including equal access to justice, so that they can be safe and enjoy a life without violence. There is no excuse for violence against women”, said Dominika Stojanoska, UN Women Moldova country representative.
The color of the campaign is orange, which is a symbol of a bright, violence-free future for every woman and girl. The hashtag of the campaign is #NicoScuza (Romanian for #NoExcuses).
