A child aged two from Chisinau fell down from the fourth floor of an apartment building. The boy was admitted to the Municipal Children’s Hospital “Valentin Ignatenco” in a very serious state. Specialists warn that such cases increase in number during the warm season. The grownups are urged not to allow the children to approach the windows and to fix well the mosquito nets that can fall easily when they are pushed even by a small child.

The hospital’s vice director Vitalie Mihalcean has told IPN that they boy suffered multiple traumas, including an open leg fracture, and was taken to the intensive care section in a critical state. The child was operated and will most probably undergo other surgeries. The exact circumstances of the incident are not yet known.

Last month, a child aged one year and nine months from Chisinau died when he fell down from the ninth floor of the apartment building where he lived with his family. Left without supervision, the boy climbed on the windowsill and fell down when he leaned onto the mosquito net.

The adults must not leave the children alone when airing the room or should better go out with them in the period. Another solution is to open the windows vertically, from down to up. The kids’ access to balconies must be restricted as this is a very dangerous place. There should be no tables, chairs or stands on the balcony or near the window as the children can mount them and can fall out.

According to the data of the National Health Management Center, more than 2,000 children under five sustained injuries in Moldova last year. Over 40 of these died. A study carried out within the Regionalization of the Pediatric Emergency and Intensive Care Services in Moldova Project (REPEMOL), 66% of the parents realize the risks to which their children are exposed in the home.
