The General Prosecutor's Office has been notified ex officio of the unpleasant odour that persists in the municipality of Chisinau. A press release, quoted by IPN, said that it was ordered to initiate two criminal cases for the elucidation of the circumstances, the identification of the guilty persons and the eventual recovery of the caused damages.

Chisinau City Hall has been also notified ex officio. According to the municipal authorities, the wastewater treatment plant operates normally. No breakdown or damages that would endanger the activity of this facility have been attested, according to the findings of the working group made up of representatives of Apa-Canal Chisinau, of the specialised subdivisions and municipal councillors, who checked the situation on site.

Former Minister of Environment Valeriu Munteanu wrote on Facebook that the problem of the odour arose due to the negligence of the decision-makers from Apa-Canal Chisinau. Another cause would be the previous agreements between the municipal authorities and economic agents, which resulted in the discharge of toxic substances from the technological activity of different companies into the treatment plant, affecting its functioning. The collected sludge reaches the waters of the Bâc river, causing enormous environmental damage.
