Two drives of a bus travelling to Italy, a former customs officer and a current one were arrested in a cigarettes smuggling case. The merchandise – 40,000 packs of cigarettes – was seized in Romania, IPN reports, quoting the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases.

The case was documented by the Romanian authorities in April, when it was determined that the cigarettes belonged to the driver of the bus – a man with dual nationality, Moldovan and Romanian – and to the reserve driver, who intended to sell the merchandise on the black market in Italy.

The four persons are aged between 35 and 45. The prosecutors are considering whether to ask the court to remand the four in custody or not.

Details about the contraband are available in a press release of the Romanian Border Police of April 28, 2022.
