The independence referendum which will be organized in September in Transnistria will strain the public life through its collateral effects, but will not lead to legalizing the “regime” or returning to a federal model of the Republic of Moldova, the political analysts of the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” consider.
According to the “Economic Monitor” for the second trimester of 2006, published by IDIS “Viitorul”, Transnistria is a political and economical blackmailing factor for Moldova. The customs regime on the Moldovan-Ukrainian border created a new situation in the settlement process, but the separatist administration stopped unilaterally the activity of some key enterprises, in this way dramatizing the situation and jeopardizing the financial situation of the population and region’s economy.
As a consequence, the GDP of the region increased only by 1.1% in the first half of 2006. At present a significant part of economic agents which create the ground of the region’s economy have registered according to the legislation of the Republic of Moldova and have resumed their activity. The budget of Transnistria in the first half of 2006 was fulfilled at 85%, fact which increased the fiscal pressure, especially in industry, is also presented in the “Economic Monitor”, cited by Info-Prim Neo.
