The situation in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia by the West put the breakaway republic of Transnistria in difficulty. The issue was developed in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

Colonel in reserve Valeriu Cerba, who is the pro-rector of the University of European Studies of Moldova, said the blocking of the border on the Transnistrian segment worsened the situation of the Transnistrian economy. “The blocking of the border by Ukraine foiled the businesses of the Transnistrian smugglers who made a special contribution to the Transnistrian economy. This factor will have an considerable impact on the military equipment and security of the separatist regime. Those over 15,000 mercenaries who are in Transnistria will ultimately become a danger to Shevchuk. Moscow started to cause hysteria and may prepare a new hotbed,” he stated.

According to former member of the Joint Control Commission Ion Leahu, there are now two scenarios referring to Transnistria.  “Some are for the peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict, by diplomatic ways. Chinua and its foreign partners support this scenario. The other scenario, of Moscow, envisions the resolving of the dispute by a military way in its favor. This is how the aggressive statements concerning Transnistria by Russian officials can be explained,” he said.

Politician Valentin Krylov said Tiraspol is in difficulty owing to the geopolitical situation. “It’s known that most of Transnistria’s exports are directed not to Russia, but to the European Union. Transnistria is pressurized from two sides. On the one hand, there is the EU, which warns that Transnistria will lose this market if it does not change its position. On the other hand, the region cannot renounce the protection of Moscow, from which it receives significant subsidies,” he stated.
