Representatives of the public organizations “Voievod”, “Urmasii lui Stefan” (“Stefan’s Followers”) and “Scutul moldovenesc” (“Moldovan Shield”) condemn the political activity in the Republic of Moldova of ex-Romanian President Traian Basescu by which the union is promoted. In a news conference at IPN on November 23, the leaders of the three NGOs called on the authorities to annul the Constitution’s article that enables foreign citizens to become involved in Moldovan politics.

Dumitru Roibu, chairman of the Youth Movement “Urmasii lui Stefan”, said that Traiana Basescu, as the president of honor of the National Unity Party (PUN) of Moldova, takes part in meetings with people in districts. Traian Basescu’s statements about the union encroach upon Moldova’s sovereignty and make the relations between the two sides of the Nistru more difficult. The ex-President of Romania also violates the Constitution’s article on the language spoken on Moldova’s territory.

Dumitru Roibu expressed his regret at the fact that the Security and Intelligent Service (SIS) ignores these things and does not take measures to avoid the danger threatening the security of the state. “Traian Basescu’s behavior is discriminatory. Those who say that the speak Moldovan are discriminated. This incites the people to hatred and aggression. We will submit a relevant complaint to the Council for the Prevention of Discrimination,” stated Dumitru Roibu.

Nicolae Pascaru, chairman of the Youth Movement “Voievod”, requested the authorities to investigate the calls to violence made by Traian Basescu. “He should be driven away. Our politicians should have dignity and should do so that he no longer comes to our country. Traian Basescu is trying to teach us how we should sell our country and how internal politics should look like,” stated Nicolae Pascaru.

“By the union supported by Traian Basescu, Moldova is divided. Traian Basescu becomes less credible in Rimania and is trying to gain popularity in the Republic of Moldova,” siad Igor Sarbu, head of the movement “Scutul Moldovenesc”.

The leaders of the three NGOs called upon society to be vigilant and attentive to the messages disseminated by Traian Basescu in the meetings organized in districts by the PUN. They said they will notify the SIS so that this takes measures against the promotion of messages that instigate aggression and discrimination.
