“Three lives can be saved by one blood donation and this is a priceless gift that cannot be bought with money. This can be offered from the heart only,” Minister of Health Viorica Dumbrăveanu wrote on her Facebook page on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day that is celebrated on June 14, IPN reports.

“Today I want to thank the 96 voluntary, regular donors who realized that the saving of human lives is the virtue of powerful people. I also want to transmit my gratitude to the 54,545 donors who in 2019 made about 71,003 blood donations and the 150 donors of convalescent plasma who contributed to saving 45 persons infected with COVID-19, in a very serious state. This is an act of heroism, solidarity and responsibility,” wrote Viorica Dumbrăveanu.

On the same occasion, Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi transmitted a congratulatory message to all blood donors. “On this day, the people are urged to donate blood and blood components in order to save lives. Blood donation is an act of solidarity, generosity and offering of a chance to life to the sick ones. A drop of donated blood can save a human live, can help the person lead a life of a higher quality and is pressingly needed in emergencies. Also, the access to blood in sufficient quantities is key for having an efficient healthcare system,” wrote the Speaker.

Zinaida Grechanyi noted that in the current pandemic situation, it is very important that the citizens realize the necessity of donating blood for helping sick persons, including those with COVID-19.

On its website, the World Health Organization said the need for safe blood is universal. Safe blood is critical both for treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. Blood is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies of all kinds and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and neonatal care.

The theme for the Blood Donor Day 2020 is “Safe Blood Saves Lives” which is promoted with the slogan “Give blood and make the world a healthier place”.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, 54,545 persons donated blood and blood components in Moldova in 2019, with 95.5% of these being voluntary, unpaid donors. The National Blood Transfusion Service has 96 voluntary, regular donors and four of them have donated blood every two months during ten consecutive years, while 92 have donated blood regularly during the last five years.
