Three projects in the area of cyber security were launched in Chisinau within the NATO Science for Peace and Security Program that is a policy tool that enhances cooperation and dialogue with all partners, based on scientific research, innovation, and knowledge exchange, IPN reports.

In the launch, Elena Marzac, executive director of the NATO Information and Documentation Center in Moldova, said the first project envisions the launch of the Cyber Security Research and Training Lab at the Technical University, which is an initiative of the Special Telecommunications Center, with the support of NATO, the U.S. Embassy and the Embassy of Estonia. The lab will house training seminars that will contribute to improving the state’s capacity to react to the challenges of modern society by diversifying investigation measures and preventing cyber security incidents.

According to Michael Gaul, Senior Adviser for Projects and Strategies in NATO’s Emerging Security Challenges Division, the Lab is set up at the Technical University in order to involve talented students in developing cyber-attack defense mechanisms.

NATO is not only a military, but also a political alliance that promotes peace and security all over the world. The launched projects will help strengthen the state institutions and will thus contribute to increased welfare, stated Michael Gaul.

Within the second project, an institution will be created at the Ministry of Defense as an efficient instrument for counteracting risks and threats as a result of the more complex and numerous cyber-attacks. In this regard, Moldova cooperates with NATO in building cyber defense capacities by developing and implementing joint projects.

Emil Druc, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ General Multilateral Cooperation Division, said not many know that NATO carries out research studies to counteract the challenges of modern society, while Moldova fully benefits from the scientific cooperation with NATO.

The third project is launched in the context of the implementation of the United National Security Council Resolution 1325 on women and peace. The goal of the project is to assist the Government and civil society in working out the national inter-institutional strategy for implementing the Resolution.

Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology Vitalie Tarlev approved of the launched projects now that the absorption by the population of the new information technology increases the risk of cyber-attacks.
