Thousands of veterans remember their fellows that died in battle

The meeting dedicated to the 15-th anniversary of the start of the armed conflict on the Nistru, organised Friday morning at the memorial Complex “Eternity”, began with an appeal for reconciliation and creation of a single organisation of the Nistru War veterans, made by head of the Veterans’ Union “Saint George the Victorious”, Victor Alergus, Info-Prim Neo reports. Alergus said that 15 years after the war unleashed, it is time for reconciliation, it’s also time that all the participants give up “political rivalry” and become “a force as in 1992, that served the cause of our country and accomplished many things for those alive and those who went to heaven”. For his part, head of National Union of Independence War Veterans, Eduard Maican, urged the Parliament to declare the day of March 2 as the Memory Day. At the same time, Maican says it is time to inaugurate a museum to heroes who died during the war and erect headstones to heroes of Cosnita and Cocieri battles, the bloodiest battles of the war. “In 1992, for the first time since Stefan the Great’s reign, Moldovans were called to arms, fought and shed young blood on the banks of the Nistru River”, Maican said. As he says, there are many black spots of that war, which are to be elucidated. At the same time, Maican says heroes are not belonging to veterans’ organisations, parties or fellowships, but are the patrimony of the nation and deserve to be commemorated by the entire society. Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin assured the veterans that the country’s leadership is daily looking for solutions to the country’s reintegration, this being the ideal followed by combatants back in 1992. The President appreciated the veterans’ support in defending the sovereignty and integrity of Moldova in 1992, when the history “challenged us to see who we are and what we are worth”. After the meeting, the country’s leadership, all the parliamentary factions, and Chisinau authorities laid flowers at the heroes’ monument. When they left, several thousands of combatants and members of the families of those who fell on duty had access to the monument of fellows.
