The early parliamentary elections do not represent the biggest problem for Moldova, Ileana Racheru, scientific researcher for the ex-Soviet space at the Romanian Diplomatic Institute, said in the program “European Horizon” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“The suspension of external financing is the most serious problem faced now by Moldova. No matter who is in the government, the country will be unable to cope with the situation without external financing,” stated Racheru.

The Romanian researcher considers none of the ruling parties in Moldova will gain as a result of the early elections. “The last poll showed that the parties that consider themselves pro-European will most probably not form part of the government. It seems paradoxical, but the PSRM, which pleads so intensely for early elections, will also suffer as a result of these. Surveys show that this party could have fewer seats because it would win at most 15% of the poll. Renato Usatyi is now the most popular Moldova politician and his party has chances to win the largest number of seats,” she stated.

Ileana Racheru considers that no matter who comes to power as a result of the possible early elections, these will be unable to cope without external financing. “It is believed that if Renato Usatyi and Igor Dodon win the elections, they will take loans from the Russian Federation. This is highly improbable as Russia does not make long-term investments. Moreover, Russia itself faces economic problems, especially owing to the decrease in oil prices, and incurred large costs as a result of the annexation of Crimea and of its military intervention in Syria. Thus, the same Igor Dodon could be put in the situation to negotiate with the Europeans if he comes to power. Without the Europeans’ money, Dodon will have the same fate as the corrupt pro-Europeans,” said the researcher.
