The State Committee charged with drafting the National Strategy for Sustainable Development of the Agro-industrial Sector (NSSDAS) has named the priorities, objectives and tasks for the strategy at its first meeting on Thursday, August 9.
The committee agreed that the Strategy will focus on issues related to farming; enhancement of soil fertility; possibilities of expanding areas of irrigated land by rehabilitating old systems and implementing performing irrigation technology; setting up small-sized processing businesses in every rural settlement; establishing repair shops for farm vehicles across the country; improving professional skills to meet the modern requirements in agriculture; implementing new highly productive and weather-resistant varieties and species, as well as modern technology; expanding areas of forestland, etc.
PM Vasile Tarlev, who is also the chair of the committee, stressed the need for European expert advice in working out such a crucial document. He pointed out that the Government is counting on the active involvement of the Academy of Sciences, as well as agricultural NGOs.
It was decided at the meeting that the committee members will come together at regular intervals to assess the stages of working out the Strategy, in order to produce an efficient and viable document.
The committee was founded by presidential decree in an effort to improve the country’s food security and the living standards in rural areas through sustainable development of the agro-industrial sector, according to the EU standards.
