The authorities aim to immunize 70% of the country’s population so as to stop the community transmission of the SARS-COV-2 and to contain the pandemic. According to the secretary of state at the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection Tatiana Zatyk, if the necessary doses of vaccine exist, the whole vaccination process can last for up to a year, IPN reports.

The functionary said the health system is coping with difficulty with the large number of infections, most of which are serious forms. The presence of the British variant of the virus could be an explanation, but there is no certainty yet. Furthermore, a wave of reinfections is being witnessed.

“According to the latest data, we have 183 cases of reinfection with SARS-COV-2. All the reinfections occurred in over six months,” Tatiana Zatyk stated in the talk show “Natalia Morari’s Politics” on TV8 channel.

She noted that the mass immunization of the people is the only solution for overcoming the pandemic crisis. Through the COVAX platform, Moldova is to receive free vaccines for immunizing 20% of the population. Later the vaccine will be bought at preferential prices.

“Through this platform, we can buy vaccines at a preferential price for another 30% of the population. Our goal is to immunize 70% of the population and we will be then able to speak about the population’s immunity that can stop the pandemic,” stated Tatiana Zatyk.

She also said that there is stiff competition for COVID-19 vaccines on the world market and Moldova could yet wait for the new doses of vaccine.

”We estimate the first immunization stage will last for two months, the second stage for four months and the third stage for another four months, but only if the vaccine is available in sufficient quantities so as to cover all the categories,” stated Tatiana Zatyk.

Under the national immunization plan, the first stage embraces the doctors and employees of the health system, the second - the personas aged 60 and over and those with comorbidies, while the third stage- the general population.
