A special commission is examining the scene to establish why eight railcars of a freight train derailed near Giurgiulesti. This railroad section was closed, IPN reports.

Suspended Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Vasile Botnari has told IPN that only freight trains ran on this section so that the rail passenger traffic will not be affected. Works are now being performed to put the cars back on track. Experts of Moldova’s Railroad are to establish the causes of the incident.

According to Vasile Botnari, they earlier put forward a set of measures for strengthening road safety. One of them refers to the creation of a railroad agency with certification, authorization, surveillance and control duties in the railroad sector. “The infrastructure and rolling stock are indeed worn-out, but inspections are performed to make sure that the railroad is safe. We yet need a body that will strictly supervise all the procedures and the works perfumed on the railroad. Now this objective is pursued by the Democratic Party in its election campaign,” he stated.

Eight of the 53 railcars loaded with iron ore of a freight train travelling from Reni to Galati derailed at the entrance to Giurgiulesti station in the evening of November 4.
