The Moldovan and Romanian ministries of culture are making considerable efforts for the younger generation to read books, and the organization of the Bookfest International Fair is proof of close cooperation. Statements in this regard were made in opening the Fair by the ministers from the two countries.

“Part of the books exhibited at the Bookfest International Fair later end up in the collections of national libraries and the collections of public libraries in the country. Following the five previous editions of the book fair, 17,201 copies of books, constituting new and high-quality books, arrived free of charge in the country’s libraries through distributed donations”, said Sergiu Prodan, the Moldovan minister of culture.

Sergiu Prodan announced that the Ministry of Culture is launching the national campaign “September - no day without culture”. He urged readers not to limit themselves to September, but to read the whole year round.

The Romanian Minister of Culture, Raluca Turcan, stated that supporting Culture in Moldovan is a constant and growing preoccupation for Romania. “The most important publishing houses from Romania and Moldova are present in Chisinau, which proves the scale of this edition of the festival”, said Raluca Turcan.

In the opening of the event, the participants stated that in the age of technology, consumption of written culture and book buying need to be encouraged, and this is a European practice. Any government, any relevant ministry has the obligation to pay increasing attention to the consumption of written culture.
