Former MP Stela Jantuan said not Eduard Harunjen decides if he should leave or remain prosecutor general. In the program “Politics of Natalia Morari” on TV8 channel, she stated it is not yet evident that the old system is falling, while the approach of the current government is situational rather than conceptual, but it should derive from the statement on state capture adopted by Moldova’s Parliament, IPN reports.
“I can say with certitude, even if subjectively, that such figures as Harunjen, Bețișor and other persons who served the former regime and held key posts through which illegal operations and schemes were employed do not take decisions themselves,” said the ex-MP, suggesting someone from the former government continues to control these from behind.
Political commentator Victor Ciobanu said the judicial system was built so that the prosecutor general is the key figure of the whole system. He is the person who comes to Parliament and withdraws the immunity of MPs, who starts criminal cases against judges in particular conditions. “That’s while Harunjen was given clear instructions to remain till the end as the situation will remain unchanged as long as he keeps this post,” stated the commentator, noting the current parliamentary majority didn’t realize the importance of the statement on state capture that was adopted by Parliament.
Fadei Nagachevski, adviser to the Parliament Speaker, said no one intends to remove Eduard Harunjen from the post of prosecutor general. Discussions will be held on how this was named prosecutor general as, under the legislation, the candidate for this post shouldn’t have been a member of the Superior Council of Prosecutors during the six months prior to his appointment, while Eduard Harunjen had been a member of the Council. “I wonder if he was in general compatible with this post and how he was appointed to it,” stated Fadei Nagachevski.
He noted the effect of the documents signed by Eduard Harunjen while in office will not be annulled. These will be analyzed to see which of them were legal and which were illegal.
Moldova’s Parliament will convene on July 9 to initiate the procedure for dismissing Eduard Harunjen from the post of prosecutor general. President Igor Dodon informed about this through his Facebook page.
