The year 2016 was a very difficult political year, but steps were taken to establish and maintain stability. Next year the parliamentary alliance will continue to implement reforms and will ensure cooperation between the Government and Parliament so that the people feel only benefits, Liberal MP Stefan Vlas said in the public debate “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years”, staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.

The MP stated that a profound crisis was witnessed last year, but this year important steps have been taken to ensure stability and this was ensured. This is not yet absolute stability, but no country has such stability. In general, 2016 was full of political events. The formation of a parliamentary alliance was very important as this ensured the necessary stability.

“No matter how harshly the parliamentary opposition and the extraparliamentary parties criticize us, it should be clear that if early parliamentary elections had been held this spring, pro-Russian forces would have come to power and the European course that is now in the agenda of the parliamentary alliance would have been affected,” said Stefan Vlas.

He also said that the signing of an agreement with the IMF is another important event. This will enable Moldova to step firmly and continue to have stability and to attract investments that already come and will yet come next year.

Among the events of the year, the lawmaker also mentioned the Constitutional Court’s judgment to restore the people’s right to choose the President themselves. However, he said that Moldova already had Presidents elected directly and no major changes were felt then. There was poverty and chaos as well. The President-elect will be unable to essentially change things and there will be a kind of Ping-Pong between the presidential institution and the government.

The public debate “Republic of Moldova at a crossroads of political years” was the 67th installment of the series of debates “Developing political culture by public debates” that are staged by IPN with the assistance of Germany’s Hanns Seidel Foundation.
