Expert Stefan Gligor is of the opinion that the new Prosecutor General, Alexandr Stoianoglo, who was appointed to the post yesterday, has a historic chance to prove that, regardless of the circumstances through which he was assigned to this office, if he takes a principled stand, he may become a surprise for the entire Moldovan political class, including for the PSRM. According to him, a first test for the head of the Prosecutor's Office will be his stance on the high profile cases, IPN reports.

"I very much hope that the appointment of Mr. Stoianoglo, who has a good reputation as a balanced, honest person, will be a pleasant surprise for everyone. I hope that Mr. Stoianoglo understands how difficult his mission is and how quickly he can be discredited if he does not cope with the amount of work that has accumulated during the 2015-2019 period, "stated Stefan Gligor on „Punctul pe azi”/ " Point on Today " program on TVR Moldova.

In his opinion, if Stoianoglo convinces the society in the cases of the "robbery of the century", the "Russian laundromat", and the illegal financing of parties, through credible, documented investigations and concrete results, then he stands a chance to revamp the Prosecutor's Office and contribute to a historic change in the judiciary.

Democrat MP Sergiu Sîrbu argues that the appointment of Alexandr Stoianoglo is not the result of an agreement between the Democratic Party and the Socialist Party, as it is rumoured in the public space. "There are still some provisions in the law that make the prosecutor very vulnerable to politics because now there is the possibility for the Ministry of Justice to set up a commission to evaluate the prosecutor's activity. It is no longer an immovable mandate”, mentioned Sergiu Sîrbu.

PAS MP Mihai Popșoi states that for President Igor Dodon a truly independent prosecutor would have been like a bad dream. "In this situation, the head of state deemed it necessary to contribute to the dismissal of the previous government. For him the most important thing is to save his own skin from prison, and also to win a second term. But the priority was to avoid the defendants’ bench. (...) Dodon has strictly narrow personal interests, that is why he needs a general prosecutor who, at least, would not touch him, " said the parliamentarian.

Alexandr Stoianoglo was appointed as prosecutor general by presidential decree, after obtaining the highest score at the interview conducted by the Superior Council of Prosecutors. According to the Constitution, the Prosecutor General is appointed to office for a term of seven years, without the right to be re-assigned to this position.
