Statistics ahead of March 8: Women prevail among Moldova’s population

Representing 52.3% of the total, women prevail among the population with regular residence in Moldova. As of the beginning of 2022, there were 91 men for every 100 women. Women live more than seven years longer than men, according to a study presented by the National Bureau of Statistics ahead of the International Women’s Day on March 8.

Life expectancy at birth in 2021 was 73 years for women and 65 years for men. The difference is due to a higher level of premature mortality among men, especially of working age (16-62 years). As of January 2023, of the total number of pensioners, 675,7000 or 63.8% were women.

Women marry earlier than men. The average age of women at first marriage in 2021 was 26 years, and 29 years for men. Most men who got married in 2021 were aged 25-29 (35.2%), and in the case of women, marriages prevailed in the 20-24 years age group (33.9%).

According to Labor Force Survey data, women aged 25-64 have a higher level of education compared to men of the same age. Men leave education for work earlier than women.

The share of women in the employed population aged 15 and older is lower compared to that of men (47.5% women and 52.5% men in 2021). The gender gap in employment was 9.3 points in 2021: women had an employment rate of 35.4% compared to 44.7% for men.

Women mainly work in the service sector. In terms of remuneration, women earn on average 14% less than men. In absolute terms, the discrepancy constituted about 1319 lei in 2021.

At the same time, unemployment affects men more than women. The unemployment rate in 2021 was 3.8% among men and 2.5% among women.

Men also predominate in the number of victims of reported crimes. In 2022, 13.5 thousand victims of crimes were registered. The share of men in the total number of victims was 57.0%, compared to 43.0% women.
