The members of the Superior Council of Prosecutors were at the end of their rope, the head of the Parliaments’ legal commission for appointments and immunities Olesea Stamate said, commenting on the institution of criminal proceedings against Alexandr Stoianoglo. According to her, even if everyone knew about the facts invoked by MP Lilian Carp in his claim, the former composition of SCP didn’t have the courage to investigate those facts about Stoianoglo. After yesterday’s events, the initiation of the procedure for assessing the work of the Prosecutor General can wait, IPN reports.

In his claim to SCP, PAS MP Lilian Carp says that Alexandr Stoianoglo, when he sat as an MP, promoted an amendment that facilitated the Russian Laundromat – the siphoning of huge sums of money from the Russian Federation through Moldovan banks. Olesea Stamate said this thing was known, but the former composition of the Superior Council of Prosecutors didn’t take attitude as it was protecting people from the system.

“It was very hard for an ordinary persecutor to rise up and start a criminal case against the Prosecutor General, especially because something like this is permitted only by the Superior Council of Prosecutors. The SCP’s makeup until recently was a closed circle that defended the system only. Now the composition of the Council was diversified as two new members were added. If we analyze the SCP’s decision, we see that not only the new members voted in favor of assigning a prosecutor to examine the facts invoked in the claim. It’s clear that they were at the end of their rope. They realized that something like this can no longer be endured,” Olesea Stamate stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

Olesea Stamate made it clear that until the accusations made against Stoianoglo are not clarified, it is not opportune to start the procedure for assessing his work.

“As the Prosecutor General is investigated criminally, the decision makers can put off the inquiry so that it become clear first if the Prosecutor General was involved in those deeds or not. When he is investigated on such serious charges, the assessment of his activity can be inappropriate already,” stated Stamate.

Alexandr Stoianoglo was placed under arrest for 72 hours on October 5, being charged with abuse of power, misconduct in office, passive corruption and falsehood. When going out of the Prosecutor General’s Office, Alexandr Stoianoglo said that he was witnessing “a return to state capture”.
