Soros Foundation-Moldova is the main financing source of NGOs working in the social area of Moldova

Over 38% of the NGOs of Moldova working in the social field are financed by Soros Foundation Moldova. The list of the main contributors includes also USAID (18.7%) and UNICEF (16.6%), in the situation when the budgets of the associative sector are constituted of grants and donor contracts. These are the data of an opinion poll regarding the situation and the necessities of NGOs active in the social area of Moldova. The research was organized by TACIS project “Strengthening the civil society in Moldova”.
According to the opinion poll, about 68% of the questioned NGOs think that the activity of this type of organizations must represent the interests of the community. According to the estimations, the area covered the best by NGOs is trafficking in human beings (46%), children at risk and persons with disabilities (27%) and the areas covered the best by the Local Public Administrations (LPA) are the single old persons (70%) domestic violence victims (54%). At the same time the fewest services are provided to the drug and alcohol addicts (53%) and unemployed (51%).
Of the questioned NGOs, 66% offer humanitarian assistance, 49% - social integration services, 41% - rehabilitation and recovery. The beneficiaries of the services offered by NGOs are children (74%), youth (54%), teenagers (47%). The same opinion poll shows that only 45% of NGOs have employees and only 20% have 5-20 employees.
The opinion poll was organized during May 25 – June10 on the whole territory of Moldova. 255 NGO of the social area and 74 local public administration bodies have been included in the poll, 73% of the LPA are located in rural localities. The results of the research were validated by the sociological Company “CBS-Axa” Ltd.
